T-Rex Leather Auction Opens New Doors, Says BSF Enterprise CEO

BSF Enterprise's headline-grabbing cultivated T-Rex leather handbag may not have sold at its Paris auction last week, but according to chief executive Dr. Che Connon, the real prize was never the hammer price.

Speaking to Proactive's Stephen Gunnion, Dr. Che Connon said bidding on the world's first cultivated T-Rex leather handbag stalled at €150,000, short of the reserve. Even so, he described the sale as a window into an entirely new material and asset class, with tier-one sportswear and automotive giants now circling the technology behind it. Those companies, he said, were less interested in the handbag itself than in the structural integrity, scalability, and underlying science that produced it.

BSF Enterprise, also known as Bio Sustainable Futures, operates across what it calls industrial tissue engineering through three subsidiaries: 3D Bio-Tissues, which develops tools for growing functional tissue and has found traction in cultivated meat; Kerato, a medical device venture working on regenerating corneas inside the body; and its lab-grown leather business, responsible for the T-Rex piece.

Dr. Che Connon said the leather's appeal goes beyond marketing. Researchers found the T-Rex collagen carries an unusually high level of lysine, an amino acid linked to cross-linking and tissue stability, suggesting the dinosaur's skin evolved extra strength to cope with its environment. That discovery, he said, is shaping commercial conversations differently depending on the audience: brand designers are drawn to the storytelling potential, while material scientists are probing what the leather can deliver today and how the production process scales.

Dr. Che Connon attributed the broader shift in tissue engineering to a convergence of artificial intelligence, robotics, and engineering biology, which he said has moved the field away from slow, trial-and-error experimentation and toward mathematically precise, data-driven design.

Looking ahead, Dr. Che Connon flagged three milestones for investors over the next 12 months: progress toward commercial deals for the T-Rex leather, veterinary clinical data from Kerato's corneal trials, and continued strengthening of 3D Bio-Tissues' position in AI-driven engineering biology tools.
